TINTYPES

Tintypes are one of the earliest forms of photography, created in the 1800s with light-sensitive chemistry on a metal plate. Each one is hand-poured, developed in real time, and completely one-of-a-kind—no two will ever look alike. With silver and collodion preserving us exactly as we are, a tintype becomes more than a photograph, it’s an heirloom meant to last longer than we do.

ABOUT YOUR SESSION

I currently offer 8x10 portraits for $115. If you’d like more than one, each additional plate is $20 off the regular price. Each tintype is one of a kind — no negatives, no duplicates. I scan every plate after it’s washed and dried, and you’ll get your scans by email within 4 days. Your physical tintype ships after varnishing — usually within two weeks.

During Your Session
  • A tintype takes about 30 minutes start to finish.
  • I use flash indoors, but you’ll still need to hold steady for a clear image.
  • Kids and pets are welcome! Small animals are easiest, but big dogs work too (just one per plate). Expect some chaos — it’s part of the fun.
What to Wear
  • Skip pure white or black — mid-tones and textures like denim look amazing.
  • Glasses often glare; if possible, bring an old pair without lenses. Retakes aren’t possible if glare happens.
  • Makeup tip: red lipstick looks bold and beautiful; purples and pinks usually photograph as pale or white.
Porch Tintypes
  • From May to October, I offer traveling porch sessions. Shoot me an email at kelsa@kaycollective.co to set something up!
